Recovery After Robotic Prostatectomy
Hospital Stay
Most patients are discharged 1–2 days after robotic prostatectomy. A urinary catheter is placed during surgery and typically removed 7–14 days after the procedure.
At Home — First 2 Weeks
- Keep the catheter clean and draining properly
- Light walking is encouraged; avoid prolonged sitting
- Avoid driving while the catheter is in place
- Take stool softeners to avoid straining
After Catheter Removal
- Urinary leakage (incontinence) is common initially and usually improves over weeks to months
- Pelvic floor exercises (Kegel exercises) help with urinary control recovery
- Follow up with your surgeon for PSA monitoring — typically at 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months
Return to Normal Activities
- Office work: 2–3 weeks
- Driving: after catheter removal if not taking opioids
- Strenuous exercise: 4–6 weeks
- Sexual activity: as advised by your surgeon (typically 4–6 weeks)
