Recovery After Robotic Prostatectomy

Hospital Stay

Most patients are discharged 1–2 days after robotic prostatectomy. A urinary catheter is placed during surgery and typically removed 7–14 days after the procedure.

At Home — First 2 Weeks

  • Keep the catheter clean and draining properly
  • Light walking is encouraged; avoid prolonged sitting
  • Avoid driving while the catheter is in place
  • Take stool softeners to avoid straining

After Catheter Removal

  • Urinary leakage (incontinence) is common initially and usually improves over weeks to months
  • Pelvic floor exercises (Kegel exercises) help with urinary control recovery
  • Follow up with your surgeon for PSA monitoring — typically at 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months

Return to Normal Activities

  • Office work: 2–3 weeks
  • Driving: after catheter removal if not taking opioids
  • Strenuous exercise: 4–6 weeks
  • Sexual activity: as advised by your surgeon (typically 4–6 weeks)
