Preparing for Ureteroscopy

Before Your Procedure

  • Fast (no food or water) for at least 6–8 hours before the procedure unless instructed otherwise
  • Inform your doctor about all medications, especially blood thinners
  • Blood thinners (aspirin, warfarin, clopidogrel) may need to be stopped several days before surgery — confirm with your surgeon
  • A urine culture may be required to rule out infection prior to the procedure
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home — you will receive anesthesia

What to Expect

Ureteroscopy is usually performed under general or spinal anesthesia. The procedure typically takes 30–90 minutes. After the procedure, a ureteral stent may be placed temporarily.

After the Procedure

  • Mild burning with urination and pink-tinged urine are normal for a few days
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Stent removal is usually scheduled 1–2 weeks after the procedure
  • Contact your doctor if you develop fever, severe pain, or inability to urinate
