Preparing for Robotic Surgery

Before Robotic Surgery

  • Pre-operative laboratory tests, ECG, and chest X-ray will be scheduled
  • Fast (no food or water) for 8 hours before surgery
  • Stop blood thinners as instructed by your surgeon (usually 5–7 days before)
  • Bowel preparation may be required for some procedures
  • Arrange a 1–3 day hospital stay

The Day of Surgery

General anesthesia is used. The robotic system creates small incisions in the abdomen. Surgical time varies by procedure (typically 2–4 hours).

After Robotic Surgery

  • A urinary catheter will be in place for 1–7 days depending on the procedure
  • Pain is typically mild and managed with oral medications
  • Most patients are discharged within 1–3 days
  • Light walking is encouraged from day 1; avoid heavy lifting for 4–6 weeks
