What to Expect After Kidney Stone Surgery

Immediately After Surgery

  • You will be monitored in the recovery room before discharge or transfer to a ward
  • Mild discomfort, pink urine, and urinary urgency are common and expected
  • A ureteral stent may be in place — this can cause bladder discomfort and frequency

At Home

  • Drink at least 2–3 liters of water daily to flush stone fragments
  • Take prescribed pain medications and antibiotics as directed
  • Avoid strenuous activity for 1–2 weeks after ureteroscopy, or 2–4 weeks after PCNL
  • Strain your urine to catch stone fragments for analysis

Warning Signs — Call Your Doctor

  • Fever above 38.5°C
  • Severe pain not controlled by medication
  • Heavy bleeding in urine
  • Inability to urinate
  • Stent displacement (if applicable)
