Ureteral Stones

Overview

Ureteral stones are kidney stones that have moved from the kidney into the ureter. They are the most common cause of acute renal colic.

Symptoms

Sudden, severe flank pain radiating to the groin, often with nausea, vomiting, and hematuria.

Treatment

Small ureteral stones may pass spontaneously with hydration and alpha-blockers. Larger or obstructing stones are treated with ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy.
